Currently, the mainstream types of projectors on the market include 3-chip DLP projectors, single-chip DLP projectors, 3LCD projectors, etc. Each type of projector has different working principles and characteristics. Today, we will first introduce DLP projectors.
Before introducing DLP projectors, we need to understand what DLP is.
DLP stands for Digital Light Processing. The core component of a DLP projector is the DMD, which stands for Digital Micromirror Device. It achieves image display by controlling the tilting of tiny mirrors. The term DLP is often preceded by a number indicating the quantity of DMD chips used in the technology, such as 3-chip or single-chip.

Next, let's take a look at the specific working principles of DLP projectors.
Single-Chip DLP Projectors
Due to the high cost of DMD chips and the expensive optical synthesis system required, a more cost-effective method was developed using only one set of DLP (a single DMD chip) to reflect the three primary colors. A rotating color wheel sequentially directs each primary color (red, green, and blue) to the DMD in rapid succession. When each color hits the DMD and is reflected onto the screen, the final composite color is perceived by the human eye due to the persistence of vision effect.

3-Chip DLP Projectors
The 3-chip DLP technology utilizes three DLP chips (DMD chips), meaning three digital micromirror devices, to reflect red, green, and blue light respectively. The three digital micromirrors reflect light simultaneously to create the desired colors.
The three-chip structure not only requires three DMD chips but also employs a more complex optical system, making it relatively expensive.
However, the advantages of 3-chip DLP technology are also significant. It combines the strengths of 3LCD technology in color separation with the high light utilization efficiency advantages of DLP chips, making it a fusion of both technologies. In terms of its working principle, each DLP chip is responsible for one of the primary colors. The colored light reflected by the digital micromirrors passes through the projection lens to form the image.

This technology offers advantages such as high color reproduction accuracy, high contrast ratio, and can achieve brightness levels unattainable by other technologies. Currently, most high-brightness projectors on the market, such as those in the 30,000 lumens class and above, utilize 3-chip DLP technology. Due to high production costs and significant technical implementation challenges, 3-chip DLP projectors are manufactured by only a few projector brands.
Summary
Compared to other mainstream projection technologies on the market, DLP technology primarily offers the following advantages:
1. The extremely small gaps between the micromirrors in DLP result in exceptionally fine, detailed projected images with extremely high resolution. Projectors using DLP technology deliver sharper picture quality.
2. The digital nature of DLP enables pixel-perfect accuracy with no noise, superior grayscale, and outstanding color reproduction quality. It is for these reasons that DLP is currently applied in the most demanding projection scenarios, such as outdoor architectural projection, large-scale events, stage performances, and exhibitions.
3. The light source in DLP projection technology features a fully sealed design. This effectively prevents dust from entering the internal unit, protecting image quality, extending the lifespan of the light engine, and reducing long-term maintenance costs.
4. DLP projection technology is stable and highly reliable. The core DMD chip technology has passed all standard semiconductor qualification tests.
